Re: Bought my first Gold
Congrats. :bear_thumb:
Every journey begins with that first step. That 1/10 th oz gold coin is that first step in the gold bug's journey of building a physical gold stash that will outlast any fiat currency. EDIT (1-30-2010): I forgot to mention: I used to have a 1/10 oz GAE coin (I think it was a 1999 common date) that I bought over a year and a half ago in 2008, but I sold it at a coin show and bought '70's SABs with the proceeds. |
Re: Bought my first Gold
It was the same way with me, bought a 1/0th ozt gold eagle off of HSN for $61 late one night back in the early 90's. Sold it earlier this year along with 10 others for $111 each because I was strapped for FRNs. Have since then acquired many more and a quite a few other types of Au. Welcome to the real world. :9536: You're hooked now.

Re: Bought my first Gold
Congrats. This is a fever thats good for you.
My first came as a gift from my grandparents. A 20.00 coin from the small stash they squirreled away in 1933. The key is to not lose them in a boating accident or sell them for a loss at the next drop. Can't ever seem to get around that side of it.. |
Re: Bought my first Gold
I / We love hearing this from people, That's Great! You also got in after a 200$ correction, so nice timing.
Don't be upset if AU sinks another hundred, that will only deduct about five bucks from the Coin. Maybe not though they could just raise the spread! Likewise, when we hit 1500 you can think of what a nice little coin that is. No Board of directors, No taxes on gains. No etc...:applause_ Scoop up a PAMP Suisse 5 Gram, You will not be disappointed! Good for you! Now your almost an addict. Oh, and welcome to GiM! This is a great place, but just incase, Have some salt ready you might need a grain here and there! (everyone does)!!! Best to you, AGRO- Quote:

Re: Bought my first Gold
Prepare to have the only addiction that is not self destructive.
What did you get? My last 1/10th Krug. Now I *have* to find a 1/4th to have one of each. GAE's are good though. And Pandas! I can slide factional Pandas past the acco... er, ah, wife easily based on the cute factor. :bull-smile: |

And I haven't, sort of... I *trade* silver and fractional gold for one lousy coin! I get things other than Kuggers, the girls love Pandas and anything Aussie. I see pre-1933 as having additional historic value. But the Kruggers are "Daddy's" coins. |

I buy Krugerrands. The reasons have been mentioned, but I like the Old School factor too. These things are kinda plain and maybe a lil ugly to some. Dark and hard and awesome. It's a man's coin. ~Chucktatorship |

Now that would be a real "Mans Coin", in my opinion. Just got my first 1980 1/10 ozt a few weeks ago. |

Pics??? Details? What year, Where you score it from? How much? Condition??? I've been socking a few bucks away in my Bullion dorect accout for a bit, I'm finally thinking about pulling the trigger on a few 1/10... I had posted about this before, but got distracted by some pretty big expenses that cropped up... Now, I'm close to getting back on track.. I just hate that it seems like there is such a premium on the smaller sized A.Es... |

I'd look at some historical charts, consider the elections in April and put in some bids on Nucleo. But, don't forget to compare with catalog prices. I'd start out with Canadians Phils or Pandas. Those are 24kt gold. You mention fractional coins, yep they are pricier but do add up. |

1/10th Krug 20 Franc Gold Coin Austrian one Dugat I have been able to get all these close to spot by being patient on e-bay. What I'm wondering is if I'm heading in the wrong direction by buying foreign coins? It seems like I can get the foreign coins much closer to spot then buying Eagles but if I ever have to sell / barter with them maybe better known coins would be the preference? Any suggestions? Thanks |

Re: Bought my first Gold
Simple. Don't sell to someone who doesn't know what it is.
When selling, it's not your job to educate the buyer. Your job is to get the best price for the item. If you spend time teaching someone what a good buy they're getting you could miss the guy that has been jonesing for the 1976 1/10th Krug who would have gladly paid 30% over spot for it. Pimples, ducat=.1106ozt, 20f=.1867ozt, 1/10th=.1ozt Ahh, ducats, doubloons, pieces of eight. A pirates life for me... :s1: |
Re: Bought my first Gold
I'd buy that Ducat from you.
Some people might like shiny, new, untouched gold. Myself, I like old coins. I like thinking about some dapper guy buying a suit back in 1930 with it or storing it away for the future. Or some peasant finding it on the street. Maybe it was fodder for someone getting shot at the cantina fighting over a gambling dispute. Whatever, use your imagination. My market busting collection is as follows: 1/10 Kruggerand, my first. I still like that it was 'outlawed' in the US at one time. 10 gram suisse pamp: Untouchable assay bubble pack. Don't like untouchable. 10 peso (1959) Yes, I touch. 20 peso (1959) Ditto 1/4 kangaroo (although new, it is truly a beautiful coin). Coming in the mail 1915 Corona 1915 Ducat (restrike) 1/4 Eagle Indian (what I've wanted for a long time, can't wait). I know the modern stuff is more refined but I like that old European stuff. Bad asp dudes on the obverse. |

You're easily impressed.
Thats less than 2 ounces. I really can't see buying 1 oz coins right now. I guess on my budget I'd like to get as much variety as I can. One of each , thats the thing. |

You know those chains with little discs on them that gypsy brides sometimes wore around their waists, (and sometimes more), during the wedding? Those little discs were ducats and the chain was her dowry. Also note the jewelry on a belly dancer. All `15's are restrikes but at 23 1/2 karat who cares? They were the purest coin I had for quite some time and I *think* they are the purest coin in general circulation ever. |
